Making my Bed

I use to have a pretty little bed that looked like this!
******
But
I needed another pretty little bed for the bedroom of #43 and so I decided to see if the size of the bed  I already had would work,
 and it did.
but the style of the bed was not the look that I was after, at all

I was looking for something more solid and Victorian but the shape of the head and footboard was the right height and shape for the sloping ceiling and the length of the bed was perfect too.
Reluctantly, I stripped the bed down to see what I could do with it.

Right shape, wrong material
and WAY too country!
Yet, where there is the will there is a way!
... you just have to find it
hmmmm?
metal cutters to the rescue!

First, take out the metal filigree insert since I did not like it or need it
That's better!
 I did both ends
I tried out the mattress and had a look.  I think it needs something don't you?

I was going to use wood but didn't think that I could do a good enough job with it
so,
I decided to use card just because it was easier and I have lots of it .
I drew the pattern onto paper using the bed frame as a stencil
I cut the pattern out with a pair of scissors and then transfered the pattern onto some heavy card

I checked the fit of the card and then glued it into the centre of the bed frame with
Quick Grip glue.
Oh dear, is that a gap I see?
Yes, it is!
 ( dog gone it! )
But Never fear...... Car putty is Here!
Why do a little when you can do a whole lot!?
so I did the back of both the head board and the footboard.

I used a flexible putty knife and leveled it out on the mat board as cleanly as I could.
This sets up very quickly and is as dense as wood. It has fumes, so I had the window wide open and the fan on.  I let it dry overnight.
While the backs are drying I tried to work out the embellishments
Where's my ball chain?
Ahhh yes, Here it is !

 Maybe this?
not sure
 I am Still  Experimenting
 and Still checking!
I like this combination of metal bits on the bed
So I glued it all in place.
I decided on the paint color and began to paint it all out .
When the putty was dry, I then I sanded and and cleaned it off and painted it.  Then I waxed the ends  with brown and then black shoe polish.
The finished frame
not new looking but more like it has been around for a while
A closer look at the headboard
I Made a pillow case from an vintage cotton handkerchief
and also a cotton sheet for the mattress

I made a pillow with ticking fabric and filled it with bird gravel to give it weight
and drape
I also Needed a bedcover, so I used a man's undershirt that came from the thrift store.
( I think it looks like chenille )
For warmth, a nice fluffy bed quilt of tea stained toile, to curl up under.
and
Some needlepoint throw cushions from my dear friend Pamela Grant

This is it finished

Now I have a pretty little bed for the house on
Green Dolphin Street.

vintage victorian
sweet dreams!
the end

  3. Thank you so much Eliana! I made this bed not knowing what the end result was going to be and with only a vague idea of what I wanted. Once it was completed I was satisfied that it was what should be the look of the bed for this bedroom. Nothing too plain or too fancy, but very comfortable and warm and to wake up totally refreshed in. I hope that this is what you can see too.

  4. Hallo Elizabeth !

    1. Hello Skiddi! Thank you and Welcome! I made the original bed in the top photo, as a way to test the foil backing when I did a tutorial on it some time ago, but it has sat homeless for many months. When I decided to cut out the metal filigree, it came out very easily. After the back side was puttied with the auto body putty, I just glued on bits of wood and metal and layered it until I got the 3- D relief effect that I was after. Then acrylic Paint joined it all together. I am glad that you like the way it turned out, Skiddi! The man's winter undershirt was a 'buried treasure' in a box of fabric that I have had for a long time. And it was waiting very patiently just for this bed! ( smiles)

    1. Hello Elana! I am not surprised that you were 'horrified' when I began to break the bed apart. I do that a lot though, so I am use to it! heehee To me it is worth taking the chance because otherwise the bed will just sit.... and sit... and sit! I have many pieces of furniture that have been homeless far to long and I now I get to actually use what I already have. I shall always have the pictures of the original bedding but I am much happier with the way that this looks now, even though it is much simpler. I am glad that you are also happy with it, Elena. Thank you for saying so! But just wait until you see how it looks with the other items in the bedroom.... trust me it looks Perfect!

  6. Oh Elizabeth, you are so daring and fantastic at what you create! Love what you did to that bed! I know Sam has that same bed frame stashed away in her piles but she wouldn't be as brave as you to change it. Now she might have the courage to try something new. Thanks and great work!

  7. Hello Isabelle! I am so happy to hear from you today! I am glad that you like the bed, Isabelle. This bed was originally practically perfect in every way except the frame was visulaly too lightweight for the bedroom. The removal of the filigree was a breeze and I Didn't even need to apply a lot of pressure! Tell Sam, to dig out her bed and just begin, playing with it! The auto body filler I bought at Lordco but I know that this stuff has to be available Everywhere they sell auto parts but probably check first at Wal-Mart because they are usually cheaper. I have used it before to fill in around the windows that I blocked off on the front of this doll's house and so I know that it is very durable, and easy to sand! Tell Sam Not to be afraid to think outside the bed frame, because She may just discover Your dream!

    1. Hello Sharee! Thank you for your lovely compliment! You know, I am so surprised to hear the word "Brave" used for the making of this bed! This bed was sitting around for Months, doing nothing and so I felt I had nothing to lose by the re-making of it! If it had turned out to be a Flop, then I would have simply tried something else. There really was very little risk involved. ( smiles ) Aren't the cushions wonderful though!? I am so glad that you like them Sharee; I do too. To me they are the finishing touch!

    1. Hello sweet lady! and Thank you for your wonderful comment ! Firstly, what car putty IS: It is used to patch the rough spots and minor imperfections on the surface of a car. It is shrink resistant and dries smooth and fast and is very easy to sand. The putty acts like Spackle does for your walls except it dries waterproof and solid like wood, etc. It has a lot of fumes like turpentine, and can give you a raging headache so you MUST HAVE good ventilation when you use it. I have used it before to patch the wood when I re-located the staircase and removed the insignificant tiny front windows on the second floor of the Arthur. It works like a charm! I am glad that you have enjoyed the usage of it on this bed, Wyrna. It was my first time trying it on Mat board, but In minis we always use our Real Life materials for our abundant mini projects, don't we? Now this will give You something new to play with too!

What a great idea! I love the bed, the way it looks now.I love your solutions. How smart to use car putty. You teach me to think out of the box. I wouldn't think of using material that's used for cars. I only think in plaster. But you can't use that for everything.

    1. Hello Veronique! Thank you for your kind words and the comment about my "vision"! To me the first bed was just wrong, and if I had used it the way it was, the bed frame would have bugged me forever! With this make-over it has the look of "long standing" and I see myself sitting on the edge and bouncing up and down on it! The creaking of the springs are making a bit of a racket as they contract and expand, and their noises are very real inside my head. I tried to dress the bed with those sounds in mind. I hope that doesn't sound too demented when I say this Veronique, but that it is how it is with me.

    1. Hello my dear friend! You never fail to fill my big head with Praise! ( smiles ) I am truly delighted that you like this transformation, Giac and you are such an expert on Victorian interiors so the praise is doubly appreciated! I used the ball chain because of its flexibility that allowed it to conform to the curve of the head and footboard. Plus I have a ton of it! It also reminded me of Victorian and gave me the feeling of something "old". I found the T-shirt in my box of garage fabrics and was able to finally use it. It still had the thrift store tag attached! The comforter matches the curtains that are still in waiting so there will be some continuity. I picture myself stretched out at night in that little bed listening to the springs creak and the frame of the old house settling just before I nod off to sleeeeeeep..... zzzzzzz

    1. Hello My dearest Jane Smith! As usual Jane your comments make my day! This auto body putty was something that I originally purchased to help fill the gaps when I moved the stairwell and closed off the windows of the Arthur right at the beginning of this doll's house reno. I found it to be very easy to use and it dries rock hard yet is very easy to sand by hand. Red dust does get everywhere when sanding but, it is no different than the Spackle. I shall be using this once again when I get the roof glued on because it will fill in all the gaps and keep any light from peeking through and smooth over any tab slots. And as Martha Stewart says, " Its a good thing". ... A diamond studded .... thing! heehee

If you decide to do it too, then you will have to seal the edges with some thin glue of fraycheck because it does require it. I found mine at the thrift store and that is where I would look first Jennifer, if you are interested. I had fun making this post, although I knew people would think I was crazy; (in a good way) and I am very glad that it was entertaining.

  21. Dear Elizabeth,
I too held my breath too when I realized you were going to cut down the bed. You were right that it was not the correct style. I momentarily wondered then if you were going to upholster it but the filled in style - wood look or metal is more recognizable as Victorian.

I laughed when I read Jane Smith's comment about your visit to a Hardware Store. I can confirm Jane that ANY expedition into the world results in Elizabeth finding something that she turns amazingly into something else mini. She is an adventure to know and full of endless surprises.

I'm waiting to see what you do with the pink acrylic bath displayed in one of the early photos in this post!

It is interesting that you have called it both wood or metal and it really could be either. I lean towards the painted metal only because my Great Grandmother had a similar style of bed at her home that I use to sleep in when there for the summer holidays and I had it in mind when I was reconstructing it, but it could be wood too. The main thing is that it looks " old-fashioned and well loved". I really think that it does. As to the tub.... it is finished and waiting in the wings for its turn, but you must still be patient for a little while longer. Soon all will be revealed! ( smiles )

My great Grandmother DID have a Real Life bed like this one Susan, and I must have subconsciously had it in mind when I was transforming the frame of the mini one. My grandma's bed was a double and me and my cousins would bounce on it during the day and giggle and tell stories on it when we were suppose to be going to sleep. The bed creaked and groaned on the old springs but was very comfortable. My grandma even had a chenille spread on the bed, now that I think on it. ..... I had forgotten that. 26. Hello Em! Thank you for your comment and I it makes me very happy that you like the bed! I have to say that it usually begins by just STARING! I take photos of the spaces and then I pay attention to what I seem to keep staring at. Then I try to figure out "Why" I am fixated on the subject and then what would make it fit in better? I am looking for 'bit players' in telling the story and not 'superstars', so if I am staring at something over-long then it is taking up way too much of the limelight.
God grants us all imaginations to different degrees. What He has given to me is one that kicks in only After I have made a complete mess of something and that I have to find a correction for. That is when He comes to my rescue! If you could only see the variety of some of the corners that I have painted myself into Em, ...... so not pretty! ( smiles )

Those who may want to try it will find that it is as I say and so long as they don't get too high on the fumes, they will be able to use the car putty with great results! The bird gavel in the pillows is an old trick and is cheaper than the round beads although some may prefer them. A whole box of gravel will last for a Very long time! I need to STOP SAVING AND BEGIN USING! This is my now my new mantra! :D

  37. That is such an inspired use of car putty! I have no idea what that would be called in France, but I will give it a go using milliput, I think it's about the same thing.

You always seem to find exactly the right findings and metal bits and bobs, you must have a fabulous stash!

  38. Hello Jonquil! Thank you so much for this visit and your lovely compliment! I think you are correct in that trying the milliput may be a Great Substitution! Good thinking, let me know it turns out and I will pass it on. As to the stash of metal bits and bobs, you are right again! I even have too much! I can't find what I want because it has been all mixed up together but now I am sorting through it, and also trying to Use it, otherwise, Why have it at all??? :)

  39. Elizabeth, me gusta tu blog.

  40. Hello Isabel! I Thank You very much for your comment and compliment! I know that sometimes it is hard to see what is already good, being "destroyed" right before your eyes! hahah but there are times when sacrifices must be made for the sake of Art! Each bed has its own personality and so I had to decide which personality worked best with this bedroom. I do not miss the other because this up-dated version is a much better fit. I am delighted though that you are enjoying my blog, Isabel and very happy that you have found the tutorials to be good. That makes me very happy!

  45. Hello Genevieve! Thank you very much and I am so pleased that you have enjoyed the needlepoint pillows as well. I know that this is something that you Also specialize in, and your cushions are wonderful! PAM GRANT, my friend who stitched these up for me almost 17 years ago, made me LOTS! I am trying to use my collection of her fantastic cushions because they have been in storage containers far too long. I am very proud of her sewing skills and that she was so very generous to me with them!

  46. Elizabeth, you always make everything seemed like fun to do. And the other wonderful thing you do when you show us your process is how anything and everything is possible. With a bit of imagination.

I love everything you did to the bed (although I rather love the old one too. I don't think I will have the courage to do what you did). The covers, the quilt and your friend's pillows. All the touches are perfect ones.

  47. Hello my sweet Sans! It IS fun to do!!!! I love seeing the possibilities in what is mass produced and intended for use, one way, and making it change direction and become another. My favorite fairy tale is Cinderella (and also Beauty and the Beast) both about transformations! Looking beyond what is most obvious and seeing just what it might become, and then helping it to get there.... And I know that you know this Sans, because that is just what you have been doing with your Abandoned House! You have seen beyond what was once cast away and totally neglected, and you have transformed it and filled it with new life, purpose, and artistic expressions... What can be more fun, than That!

  48. Good Morning Elizabeth,
As always the atmosphere that you create is wonderful! Of course you know I am a pushover for sun-dried bed linens!
The fireplace is a stunner and I love the glow of the fire with ash on the hearth.
Thought the flooring was a bold choice but everything harmonizes in a most uncontrived way. It is always surprising how a space expands when you put the furniture in place.
I am looking forward to spending time with you and Fatima now that I have returned from our Australian travels.
Great work! Great techniques and thank you for sharing both!

  49. Good Morning to you too Janine! Welcome home my dear friend! I thought of you as I was arranging the stacks of linen on the bed ( re: "Hal yay you ya!" post ) Next to thoughts of my great grandma and her love of ironing, I think of you when I make or see pictures of stacked linen, it is like soup and sandwich, you and linen, just go together! :D Your observation of how a room visually expands when there is furniture in it is So True, and never ceases to surprise me. I am always amused though when I see those T.V. programs where the house hunters are inside an empty room and complain about it not being big enough and then when they get their furniture in it, they have More than enough room after all and often too much space! ( They then say that they are going to need to go and buy more furniture! ) hah!
Thank you for your comment and your compliments Janine and mostly thank you for your Friendship. I highly Value and Esteem them, and am looking forward to our Get Together, very soon!!

  50. The ball chain worked wonderfully, such a great idea. The whole make over is fantastic. I have to keep a lookout for a t-shirt like yours, it looks so soft and pretty.
